Every so often, someone asks me whether I'd rather drive a brand-new performance car or a well-sorted classic. It seems like a simple question, but I've never found the answer to be quite so straightforward.
Modern automobiles are extraordinary. They accelerate faster, corner harder, stop more quickly, and offer levels of comfort and safety that engineers from previous generations could hardly have imagined. I've spent my career around exceptional automobiles, and I have tremendous respect for what today's manufacturers have accomplished.
Yet when I think about the drives I remember most, they're rarely defined by impressive specifications or the latest technology. More often, they're connected to cars that asked a little more of the driver. Cars with manual steering that communicated every change in the road surface. Cars with windows that rolled down using a simple crank. Cars that expected you to shift the gears yourself, judge your own braking points, and become an active participant in the experience rather than simply its passenger.
Those features might sound outdated by modern standards, but I believe they reveal something important about why certain automobiles continue to leave such lasting impressions. Sometimes the greatest joy behind the wheel comes not from what a car adds, but from what it chooses to leave out.
The Pleasure of Participation
Modern technology has made driving easier in almost every measurable way.
Electric power steering reduces effort during parking. Automatic transmissions shift more quickly than almost anyone can manage with a clutch pedal. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering systems, and sophisticated traction management reduce fatigue while improving safety. These are genuine achievements, and for everyday transportation they make tremendous sense.
Yet ease is not always the same thing as engagement.
One of the defining qualities of many classic automobiles is that they ask the driver to participate continuously. Steering requires deliberate input. Gear changes demand timing and coordination. Even adjusting the ventilation might involve reaching for a window crank instead of pressing a button.
None of those actions is difficult. In fact, they become second nature after only a short time. But together they create a feeling that the driver and the machine are working together rather than operating independently.
That sense of participation is surprisingly satisfying. The drive becomes something you experience rather than something that simply happens while you're sitting behind the wheel.
Feeling the Road
Perhaps no component illustrates this difference more clearly than steering.
Many modern steering systems are exceptionally precise, but they are also designed to isolate the driver from vibration, harshness, and unnecessary effort. The result is remarkable comfort, particularly on long trips or in daily commuting.
Mechanical and hydraulic steering systems tell a different story.
They communicate subtle changes in pavement texture, tire grip, and weight transfer almost continuously. Enter a corner, and the steering wheel begins delivering information long before the tires approach their limits. Drive across rough pavement, and the surface beneath the car becomes part of the conversation.
That communication requires no screen, no alert, and no software update. It is simply the physical relationship between the front tires, the road, and the driver's hands.
Automotive designer Gordon Murray, whose career includes everything from Formula One championship-winning cars to the groundbreaking McLaren F1, has often emphasized that reducing weight and preserving driver involvement are central to creating memorable automobiles. Performance numbers matter, but they are only part of what makes a car enjoyable.
The steering wheel is one of the primary ways that relationship is expressed.
The Rhythm of Manual Controls
There is also something deeply satisfying about mechanical controls.
Rolling down a window requires a few turns of a crank. Adjusting a mirror involves reaching out by hand. Starting an older engine often becomes its own small ritual, complete with familiar sounds, vibrations, and occasionally a bit of patience.
Individually, these actions save almost no time. In fact, they are objectively less convenient than modern alternatives.
Collectively, however, they create a rhythm that encourages people to pay attention.
Instead of interacting with layers of software, touchscreens, and menus, the driver interacts directly with the automobile itself. Every switch, lever, pedal, and control performs a single, obvious function. There is very little interpretation required because the machine communicates through physical feedback rather than digital interfaces.
This simplicity has another advantage. Years later, people often remember how these cars felt more vividly than the list of features they offered. They remember the satisfying click of a metal switch, the weight of a clutch pedal, the sound of a door closing, or the way an engine responded to careful throttle inputs. Those memories become part of the ownership experience in a way that is difficult to measure but easy to appreciate.
Why We Remember Certain Cars
Think back to a favorite drive from years ago. Chances are, the memory isn't centered on horsepower figures, acceleration times, or the size of the infotainment screen.
Instead, people often remember moments. They remember driving along a quiet two-lane road with the windows down on a cool evening. They remember the satisfying movement of a perfectly weighted gearshift or the sound of an engine climbing through the rev range. They remember how a car seemed to shrink around them as each corner arrived, responding naturally to every steering input.

Those memories endure because they engage more than sight alone. They involve sound, touch, timing, and movement, creating experiences that feel immersive rather than passive.
Research in psychology has consistently shown that experiences involving multiple senses tend to create stronger and more lasting memories than those relying on a single source of information. Driving an analog automobile naturally engages several senses at once, which may help explain why certain cars remain so vivid in people's memories years after they were last driven.
Convenience Has Changed the Driving Experience
There is no question that modern vehicles have become easier to live with.
Automatic climate control maintains a comfortable cabin temperature without adjustment. Navigation systems eliminate the need to unfold paper maps. Advanced driver-assistance systems help reduce fatigue during long highway trips. For daily transportation, these technologies have improved comfort, convenience, and safety in meaningful ways.
At the same time, convenience inevitably changes the driver's role.
As more tasks become automated, fewer decisions require direct involvement. Steering effort is reduced electronically. Transmissions anticipate gear changes before the driver thinks about them. Parking sensors, cameras, and automated systems perform tasks that once depended entirely on judgment and experience.
None of these innovations is inherently negative. In many situations, they represent genuine progress. But they also illustrate an important reality: making driving easier does not always make it more memorable.
The most engaging automobiles invite participation. They reward smooth inputs, careful observation, and gradual improvement rather than compensating for every mistake. The satisfaction comes not from arriving at the destination more quickly but from feeling connected to the journey itself.
Simplicity Has a Way of Focusing Attention
There is an interesting principle in industrial design: when every feature must justify its existence, designers tend to think more carefully about what truly matters.
Many classic automobiles were created under those kinds of constraints. They offered relatively few controls, minimal distractions, and straightforward mechanical systems. Rather than overwhelming the driver with choices, they encouraged concentration on the essential elements of driving.
That philosophy remains appealing today.
Whether someone is restoring a vintage sports car, taking an early Land Rover onto a trail, or driving a classic Porsche on a winding back road, the attraction often lies in the clarity of the experience. There are fewer competing demands for attention. The driver listens to the engine, feels the steering, watches the road, and responds accordingly.

Analog Driving in a Digital World
Perhaps the growing appreciation for analog automobiles says something about life beyond the driver's seat.
Much of modern life is mediated through screens. We communicate through devices, manage schedules with apps, and accomplish everyday tasks through increasingly sophisticated technology. These tools offer undeniable benefits, yet they also reduce the amount of direct, tactile interaction many people experience throughout the day.
Driving an analog car provides a subtle counterbalance.
The steering wheel communicates directly with the road. Mechanical controls respond immediately to physical input. The engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension become part of an ongoing conversation between the driver and the machine. Nothing about the experience feels simulated because very little stands between the person and the mechanics of the automobile.
For many enthusiasts, that authenticity is becoming increasingly valuable.
More Than Nostalgia
It would be easy to dismiss the appeal of analog driving as simple nostalgia. That explanation, however, overlooks why younger enthusiasts—many of whom grew up surrounded by digital technology—continue seeking out older automobiles.
The attraction is not necessarily to the past. It is to participation.
Classic cars ask more of their drivers, but they also give more in return. They transform routine actions into meaningful parts of the experience and remind us that involvement often creates enjoyment in ways convenience cannot.
Modern automobiles should absolutely continue becoming safer, cleaner, and more capable. Those advances have improved driving in countless important ways, and few people would willingly give up the progress that has been made.
Still, there is something worth preserving from an earlier era of automotive design. Roll-down windows, mechanical steering, manual gearboxes, and simple controls were never valuable merely because they were old. They mattered because they kept the driver connected to the machine in honest, tangible ways.
Perhaps that is why so many analog cars continue to leave such a lasting impression. Long after the specifications have been forgotten, people remember how those cars made them feel. And in the end, that feeling may be one of the most enduring measures of a truly great automobile.
